Nostrum high performance has expanded injector spray development and testing capabilities over the last several years. Nostrum is proud to present one-of-a-kind development assets discussed in this video, used for injector spray visualization and spray pattern analysis as part of internal product development. These are unique in the industry and part of the SAE J2715 standard for fuel injector spray measurement. Spray visualization: Nostrum has developed a custom-made arc-flash imaging unit that is used for high-speed injector spray imaging. This unit provides geometrical data such as spray shape, cone angle, and spray penetration depths used for design validation and CFD optimization. The flash unit can produce extremely short bursts of high-intensity light that allow the user to capture high-resolution images of the spray structure of an injector during an injection event. The flash unit, camera trigger, and injector signal are controlled by a single module allowing the user to capture images in discrete time steps to study the evolution of the spray through time. Spray patternation: Nostrum relies on a mechanical spray patternator or Hexcell patternator to analyze the mass flux distribution and the spray footprint to analyze injector spray patterns. The data provides critical information for injector spray validation as well as CFD model development. The fuel mass distribution of a given injector spray is determined by collecting the liquid droplets from consecutive injection events over 253 precision machined cells – each of which is a capacitance probe.
